Gaines Street Revitalization
Genesis Group has been working with the City of Tallahassee for several years to determine the most appropriate approach to address revitalization of the Gaines Street Corridor. Gaines Street is a significant transportation corridor that links downtown Tallahassee to Florida State University and the Capitol to the Tallahassee Regional Airport. As the oldest paved street in the City and a once bustling industrial area adjacent to the railroad, Gaines Street has been in decline for a number of years. This project consists of a 1.5 mile four lane roadway with existing businesses and historic warehouse buildings lining the street. The objective of the project is to create a sense of place by improving the corridor with expanded sidewalks, significant streetscapes, on-street parking, landscaped medians and two vehicle use lanes.
The project is divided into three segments. Genesis Group completed a detailed Preliminary Engineering Analysis to evaluate the potential for reducing the number of lanes, increasing utility capacity to accommodate future growth, addressing chronic street flooding along the corridor, and creating the sense of place desired by the City – all without impacting existing businesses within the existing right of way. Following the completion of the P.E. Report, Genesis was asked to continue work on the project and complete the detailed planning, design and permitting of all segments of the project. Segment I was completed in 2011, Segment II began construction in February 2012 with an expected completion date of January 2013. Segment III is expected to begin design by March 2012.
