Howard Avenue Drainage / Utility Improvements
As part of an on-going consultant services contract for the City of Dade City, Genesis Group provided civil engineering and related services for the Howard Avenue Utility Improvement Project. The City's goal was to determine the cause and identify possible solutions of chronic flooding on Howard Avenue between 10th and 12th.
The drainage analysis revealed that the area receives run-off from 92 acres of residential development, yet relied on a stormwater pumping station with very limited capacity for drainage. The project was divided into phases to meet City budget constraints. The first phase reduced flooding during minor rain events by adding storm inlets, upgrading conveyance pipes, and constructing a stormwater pond to buffer the peak inflow into the pumping station. The second phase, when constructed, will include upgrading the stormwater pump station’s pumps and controls as well as improving the capacity of the receiving waters.
The first phase also included the design and permitting of a 6” watermain and limited clay sanitary pipe replacement within the project limits. This project was unique in that Howard Avenue was a brick street and the contractor had to coordinate with the City Public Works Department to salvage the existing brick. Genesis Group was able to obtain a SWFWMD permit exemption for all of the Phase I work.
