Port Ybor Redevelopment
Port Ybor was once a thriving ship building / repair facility that had declined over time as industry within the City of Tampa evolved away from ship building. After being designated a brown field, the Tampa Port Authority (TPA) began redeveloping the infrastructure to support the port’s role in containerized shipping as well as a future cruise terminal.
The first phase of development included reconstructing a widened Grant Street from 20th Street west approximately 0.25 mile. The roadway section included construction of both water and sewer infrastructure to support future phases as well as a baffle box control structure to provide in-line stormwater quality treatment prior to discharge into the adjacent channel. The design included a parallel stormwater conveyance system to allow future development to discharge “clean” stormwater to the system and bypass the roadway’s baffle box treatment system.
Subsequently, a private developer contracted with the Port to design, permit, and construct a 281,600 SF (Phase II) and a 156,000 SF (Phase III) cross dock bulk distribution warehouse. Both building phases included paving, grading, and utility design to support the proposed private development. In addition, each site required a baffle box to clean the stormwater prior to discharging to the common conveyance system located within Grant Street.
