Planning for Veterans Memorials Continues for Genesis Design Team as Veterans Day Nears

On Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11 at 11:00 a.m., Tampa area veterans groups and veterans' family members will gather at the Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park and Museum to honor the community's war veterans. Since 2010, Tampa-based Genesis Engineers, Planners and Landscape Architects have been working behind the scenes with the Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park Museum Committee, Inc. and Hillsborough County Staff to help conceive, design and construct war memorials throughout the Park at 3602 Highway 301 in Tampa.

Dedication plaques and bricks throughout the Park bear personal messages, honor Veterans, and express appreciation to Park supporters.

Genesis Project Manager Kyle L. Thornton, P.E. said, “This is a unique project for us on many levels. Like many others involved in these projects, we have been volunteering time and resources to help bring the veterans’ visions for their memorials to reality.  We work with the various memorial sub committees to help develop and/or refine their concepts and then work with all the stakeholders to build consensus for the final designs.  Each memorial is unique because they reflect the vision and sentiment of the individual war veterans group members.”

The designs of three of the first group of memorials --- the Vietnam, Korea and Iraq memorials – are complete and will be the sites of Veteran’s Day ceremonies on November 11.   Each memorial is executed in a diverse palette of materials and site features including stone, specialty pavers, seating and landscaping all designed or selected to complement the armaments, sculpture, artifacts and art works on display.

The Vietnam War Memorial displays a restored Cobra Helicopter.

The 13-acre Park will eventually be the site of memorials honoring the veterans of the Gulf, Mexican American, Seminole, Spanish American, World War 1, World War II and Afghanistan wars and other events. Genesis is presently working with the Committee and Hillsborough County on conceptual designs for the Seminole Indian and World War II war memorials and producing construction plans for five other memorials. Upon build-out, the Park will be the site of more than 20 war memorials.

Custom artwork, some of which has been donated by the artists, is incorporated in many of the memorial designs.
