Babcock Ranch Preserve offers the public a unique opportunity to experience Florida’s best in nature-based recreation.
Tallahassee, FL (Jan 11, 2010) - Genesis Group, under contract with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and in cooperation with Babcock Ranch Management Partners, recently completed development of a Recreation Master Plan for the Babcock Ranch Preserve. The Recreation Master Plan will serve as a guide to recreational opportunities while providing diverse, natural resource-based activities compatible with the Preserve’s existing ranch and silvicultural operations.
The Preserve is a publicly owned conservation area located in southern Charlotte and northern Lee County, Florida. It was acquired by the State of Florida and Lee County in July of 2006, under the State’s Florida Forever and Lee County’s 20/20 environmental land conservation programs in order to conserve and protect a working landscape with its unique natural resources and cultural heritage. The Recreation Master Plan establishes recreation land use zones to better plan, manage and monitor recreation opportunities on the Preserve. Land use zones were delineated using the principles of the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (Clark and Stankey, 1979), a nationally recognized classification system developed by the U.S. Forest Service. Recreation opportunities proposed for the Preserve include trail systems for hiking, biking, and equestrian activities; wildlife viewing, camping, expanded eco-tourism and a tiered hunting program. It proposes that all public recreation on the Preserve be managed through a Core Recreation Area as funding resources become available.
