Genesis and the City of Tallahassee are proud to announce the completion of Gaines Street Phase I, Monroe Street to Macomb Street. In celebration the city sponsored a block party Friday, August 26, 2011.
Gaines Street Phase I, a transformation project that began back in 2006. The construction of the once four-lane industrial/commuter corridor, now a 2-lane pedestrian friendly road began in 2010 by Sandco, Inc. a local contractor. The revitalization will feature on-street parking spaces, new street signs, street lamps, benches, wider sidewalks, special crosswalks, landscaping, and stormwater treatment created by adding bioswales along the street. A wonderful live oak tree over 50 years old that overlooks Gaines was preserved by building a retaining wall in front of it that now features beautiful mosaic artwork created by local artist Susan Stezmann. Phase II construction which stretches from Macomb Street to Stone Valley Way will begin this fall, and Phase III from Stone Valley Way to Lake Bradford Road will follow, the road being complete in the fall 2013.
In celebration of the efforts and patience of all involved the City of Tallahassee sponsored a Block Party, which featured live music, food, games, and lots of fun activities for the whole family, as well as promote the local businesses along Gaines.
